Mrs. Ufkes' Second Grade
Meet Your Teacher

Welcome!

Second Grade is an exciting and challenging year for the students. They learn how to add and subract 3 digit numbers with renaming and regrouping, how to write persuasive essays, how to write in cursive...and the list goes on. Second Grade is no longer the 'transition' grade between First and Third Grade, it is a major step for their future success.

Iggy Update: Iggy, our green Iguana, has now reached her full size. At her last measurement, she was 56 inches from snout to tail tip. She remains as gentle as ever and entertains the class on a regular basis. She likes to bob her head during discussions and seems to love music class. She has a bad habit of 'diving' off of her shelf instead of using her log to climb down, but it does not seem to bother her to get down that way! Feel free to stop in and visit her. I know many of you remember when she was only 12 inches long and lived on the log behind my desk!

Career Unit:  The children have completed their engaged learning unit on Careers. As part of their unit, they applied for the position of Computer Assistant in our classroom. They brought home a job application form and interviewed for the position. Please take a moment and ask your child about the project. If you would like a videotape copy of the project to keep, please send a blank tape to school with your child. Thanks!

The Flat Stanley Project:

Our class participated in the Flat Stanley Project this year. Stanley went to lots of places including Mexico, England, Arizona, California, Washington D.C., Virginia, and Florida. The children, Stanley, and Stanley's hosts all had a great time with the project! Thank you to the parents and hosts for making this project such a huge success.

My Mission:

openhouse.jpg

My mission is to build the desire in my students to become life-long learners. I want them to learn to take chances and try new things. I want to challenge them to do the best that they can and to develop independence, self-confidence, and a desire to succeed. I would like for them to respect themselves and others. I want my students to feel that anything is possible if they believe in themselves.

Science: Don't be concerned if your child comes home and asks to use your silverware for a bit...in paricular, your spoons. We have been learning about sound in Science class. As part of our unit, we investigated sounds and music that can be made from common household items. The children learned how to play spoons, combs, and other 'homemade' musical instruments. They have been instructed to ask before taking your spoons to practice and to be sure to wash them before returning them to the drawer!

Peter Rabbit: The children recently read the story of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter. Some of the foods mentioned in the story were unfamiliar to the children so we had a 'tea party'. They had a chance to try current jelly, blackberry muffins, and camomile tea. The tea was served in a decorative teapot and they could try the tea with lump sugar and milk if they wished. The children had a great time and now have a much better understanding of the foods in the story!
